  • Drug Resistant Staph Threat

By Dafne Nesti • Posted: January 23rd, 2008

Editor’s Note: There has been speculation by gay leaders that the gay community has been unfairly targeted in the media as the source of this outbreak. Whether or not that is the case, we feel it’s important for our community to protect ourselves from STD as we always have. We hope you find this information to be useful.

Watch out boys. A new highly drug-resistant strain of the MRSA bacteria is making the rounds, and it affects gay men! It’s spreading rapidly among gay guys in the San Francisco and Boston areas and Los Angeles could be next.

According to the recent studies the bacteria is easily spread through anal intercourse, skin-to-skin contact and contaminated surfaces. If the right antibiotic therapy is not found, doctors fear, this condition could spread more rapidly and widely than ever.

MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus) is also known as a staph infection or the super bug. It has the ability to become resistant to antibiotics, and it seems like the new strain is going to be a tough one. A few precautions and a few tips about MRSA might help you avoid this flesh corrosive bacterium and its unfortunate consequences:

    - It starts as a small bump on the skin and can spread to become a blister, and a skin ulcer.

    - The infection can expand throughout the whole body with several other symptoms (Chills, fever, low blood pressure, headache).

    - The only way to avoid MRSA is to protect your-self by avoiding contact with the carriers of the bacteria, cleaning surfaces (especially ones in public places) that might have been contaminated and covering any skin wounds.

    - Should you feel you’ve been infected, see a doctor immediately and refrain from the use of public places such as gyms and public rest rooms where you might spread the bacteria.

MRSA is a serious threat to our community as well as the rest of the country but these precautions can help you stay healthy. As always, knowledge is power.
